After 250 feet, you will need to use an inverter. In other words, at depths 250 and lower you can pump directly with solar panels. Most people pump during the day and store the water in holding tanks or cisterns.

Actually with solar direct pumping you can pull water from up to 750 feet at low flow rates. This is not pressurized water. It basically pumps when the sun is out into a cistern. Don't forget to figure in the depth of the water in the well PLUS the amount of elevation that you need to push the water up the hill above the well location. This is called "Total Dynamic Head" or TDH. In this type of system more solar panels are need at deeper depths. At shallower depths more solar panels deliver higher gallons per min.

i can't believe i was that far off. i have pumps figured out a little better now, but still get hung up when there are horizontal distances thrown into the mix.
